4 Cues That You Found a Culturally Sensitive Therapist

We all deserve to receive therapy in an inclusive and supportive space that factors in our multiple cultural identities. Indeed, most of the therapies were developed in a way that reflects specific social constructs, values, and concepts. These might be quite different in diverse populations given that culture tends to shape the perception of health, as well as the rules, assumptions and beliefs associated with health, wellbeing and wellness.

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your therapist to avoid a cookie-cutter approach to your wellbeing. We listed a few suggestions on how to spot a culturally sensitive psychotherapist. We hope your experience reflects these principles.

  1. They have an awareness of their own cultural self-identity, beliefs, values, attitudes, and biases.

How does this sound and/or look like?

T: "I know we might have different sets of beliefs and values. I will make sure to check in regularly and to ensure there is a shared understanding of those beliefs and values. Should I have specific ideas, I will share them with you so that we can discuss them. I really appreciate your view."

  1. They demonstrate interest, specific knowledge and understanding of cultural worldviews.

How does this sound and/or look like?

T: "How you and I understand your issue can be similar or different. I am very interested in your perspective. How would you describe your issue? How would you describe it to your family or somebody in your community?"

  1. They display cultural humility and are considerate when discussing cultural differences.

How does this sound and/or look like?

T: "Since we have different cultural backgrounds, it would help me to understand you and your issues if I knew more. Can I ask you about your culture?"

  1. They exhibit cultural sensitivity during the assessment, formulation, and intervention phases.

How does this sound and/or look like?

T: "What were the social expectations from a person of your identity in your home country? In the past, what kinds of treatment, help, advice, or healing did you seek? To what extent was it useful?"
